Introduction to MOXI™ in Vernon Hills, IL
Achieve and Maintain a Youthful Glow with Moxi
The MOXI technology revitalizes skin showing the initial signs of sun damage and aging using a versatile, non-ablative, fractional laser that’s part of Sciton’s mJOULE dual-wavelength platform.
RL Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Medspa in Vernon Hills can provide you with MOXI treatments that leave your skin looking younger and more rejuvenated than ever.

Treatment overview
MOXI is a non-ablative fractionated laser that converts electrical energy into light, to target pigment by creating tiny perforations in the superficial top layer of skin.
Non-ablative fractional lasers deliver heat below the skin’s surface through thousands of tiny, deep channels without damaging surrounding tissue. This fractional approach to skin resurfacing significantly reduces the time needed to heal compared to treating an entire area with an ablative laser. MOXI treatments can also minimize skin discoloration.
What It Treats:
-

Melasma

MOXI™ for Melasma Treatment in Chicago & Vernon Hills
Melasma is one of the most common — and most stubborn — skin concerns we see at RL Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Medspa. These flat, brown, or grayish patches appear most often on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and chin, and are triggered by hormonal changes, sun exposure, and genetics. While melasma can be difficult to treat with topical skincare alone, MOXI™ offers a clinically proven, non-ablative laser solution that targets pigmentation at the source without damaging surrounding skin.
How MOXI™ Addresses Melasma
MOXI uses a 1927 nm thulium fractional laser to gently resurface the upper layers of skin where excess melanin — the pigment responsible for melasma — accumulates. By creating thousands of microscopic treatment zones, MOXI stimulates the skin’s natural renewal process, encouraging the body to shed hyperpigmented cells and generate fresh, evenly toned skin in their place. The non-ablative approach means the laser heats tissue without fully removing it, resulting in noticeably fewer side effects and significantly less downtime than ablative alternatives.
What to Expect from MOXI™ Melasma Treatments
Because melasma is a chronic condition, most patients benefit from a series of treatments rather than a single session. Our experienced providers will assess your skin type, the severity of your melasma, and your overall goals to build a personalized treatment plan. A typical protocol involves:
- 3–4 initial MOXI sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart
- Visible improvement in pigmentation and overall skin tone after the first 1–2 treatments
- Ongoing maintenance treatments every 3–6 months to prevent recurrence
- Combination with medical-grade skincare, SPF, and BBL HERO®ic or chemical peels for optimal, lasting results
Safe for a Range of Skin Tones
One of the key advantages of MOXI for melasma is its suitability across a broad range of skin types and tones, including deeper complexions (Fitzpatrick types IV–VI) that can be more sensitive to aggressive laser treatments. Our providers are trained to adjust MOXI’s energy settings to safely and effectively treat all patients while minimizing the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
A Comprehensive Approach to Melasma at RL Center
At RL Center, we understand that treating melasma requires more than just in-office laser sessions. During your consultation, your provider will review your full skin history, current medications (including hormonal contraceptives, which can worsen melasma), and daily skincare routine. We’ll build a complete treatment strategy that may include:
- MOXI™ laser treatments
- BBL HERO®ic for additional pigment correction
- Medical-grade tyrosinase-inhibiting skincare (hydroquinone, kojic acid, or azelaic acid)
- Strict daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sun protection guidance
- Hormone management recommendations in coordination with your healthcare provider
Melasma is a condition you can manage — and MOXI™ at RL Center is one of the most effective tools available to help you get there. Contact us today to schedule your complimentary consultation and find out if MOXI is the right treatment for your melasma.

How it Works
The Consultation
At RL Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Medspa, each initial patient consultation is different.
Depending on your needs, desired treatments, areas of concern, and simply who you are as a patient, we will schedule you with an actual treatment provider to discuss your goals, budget, and more. During this appointment, we will go through before & after photos, your medical history, and any questions you might have. Only then can we make a recommendation for which procedures or treatments may be right for you and why. We will be sure to educate you on how the treatments work, including what to expect during and afterward.

A typical consultation lasts about 40 minutes and is free of charge for all aesthetic treatments, including MOXI. At the end of your consultation, you will leave our office in Vernon Hills with a thorough, personalized treatment plan. And when you’re ready, we’ll schedule your first treatment session.
Your MOXI Treatment
As with any procedure at RL Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Medspa, we will begin your MOXI treatment by ensuring your total comfort in a clean, comfortable, and private treatment room.
You will be given protective eyewear, to protect your eyes from the laser light. Then your provider will roll the device’s delivery tip across all parts of your face as well as the neck, the chest, and any other areas you’d like to target.
The Sciton MOXI creates micro-injuries to stimulate the dermal repair process, revitalizing tone and texture and reducing the appearance of brown and red spots caused by sun damage or aging. The MOXI has three energy settings, to allow for customized treatment. The ideal candidate is interested in preventing and reducing signs of aging rather than dramatically correcting skin concerns The number of treatments necessary will vary from patient to patient, but many of our patients notice immediate results.
This treatment is safe for all skin types and tones.
The Recovery
There’s minimal recovery or downtime associated with the MOXI.
Your skin may take on a rougher texture for the next five days or so as the top layer sloughs off, but you’ll be able to go about your daily activities. Expect mild to moderate redness immediately afterward, but that will go away in a few hours.
It’s best to avoid putting on makeup, sunscreen, and your usual skin-care products for the remainder of the day – post instructions will be provided to patient before he/she leaves to go home.
