Evolution of Hair Removal Practices

Today, millions of men and women seek solutions for hair removal. The good news is that these means are tried and true; safe and effective practices are the standard today, but that was not always the case.

The earliest of cave paintings depict using seashells as make-shift tweezers to eliminate head hair because long matted hair was a poor insulator and promoted frostbite. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics illustrate using early depilatory creams and a pumice stone to eliminate lice and in the middle-ages men and women used crude shards of metal as the earliest form of razor shaving. Other heinous hair removal techniques also included an early form of waxing called ‘sugaring’ with molasses and animal hide, rubbing walnut oil into the scalp to deter growth, and even bandage wrapping with vinegar and animal excrement!

Today–because of these long-time practices– it is no longer socially acceptable (for women in particular) to have body hair. The standard today (as we all know) is shaving, waxing and laser hair removal. The problem with waxing is that the hair returns in approximately 6 weeks, and with shaving hair growth can be seen within 24 hours! Laser hair removal is currently the only permanent method available.

Laser hair removal uses beams of concentrated light to penetrate into the hair follicle, to be absorbed by the pigment in the hair and as a result, destroy the follicle. In the past, the procedure was most beneficial to people with dark hair and light skin, however, newer technology has made the procedure safe for patients of all skin and hair colors. Following just one treatment, some individuals may see results that last for many years. Some individuals will require a series of treatments over time and others may require maintenance treatments to maintain the hair loss. It is truly impossible to determine, in advance, how many laser hair removal treatments you will need, or if you are one of those who will require maintenance treatments.
