Skin care through (your) ages

Skin is the body’s largest organ and the first thing people notice. Upholding healthy and beautiful skin requires the right skin care regimens, even for a 20-year-old. Here are tips for every decade to help one preserve a gorgeous complexion well into the retirement years.

In one’s twenties, skin is still elastic and firm. Products to fight wrinkles are not necessary. The most important skin care routine is the regular use of sunblock to prevent premature aging and to minimize the risk of skin cancer later in life.

As one approaches thirty, fine lines may appear as skin becomes thinner and drier. Sunscreen is still important in this decade as well as proper moisture control. A moisturizer with sunblock is highly recommended.

After one’s fortieth birthday, lines may get deeper and begin appearing on the forehead and around the mouth. Here is where the use of sunscreen for the previous two decades will pay off as any sun damage becomes more apparent. Look for products that contain elastin to replace what is lost as menopause approaches. Serums can also help with sensitivity as skin becomes thinner and drier.

Past fifty and beyond, skin care needs become more specialized. Some people will have issues with lines and wrinkles while others will struggle with pigmentation. Products containing collagen and elastin can minimize the appearance of wrinkles while estrogen creams aid with helping the body make its own even as estrogen levels continue to fall after menopause. As with every other decade, a good sunscreen is still the most important product to protect delicate skin from sun damage.

It is easier to age gracefully when one still has great skin. Knowing how to care for one’s skin through the years will keep it healthy and beautiful decade after decade.
