Want Voluminous Hair? Avoid Fatty, Sugary Foods

Many of us don’t realize how much our diet affects the nature of our hair and skin. Some proteins, carbohydrates, sugars and salts keep hair weighed down, keeping it from its natural shine and bounce. Maintaining a healthy balanced diet can help improve the health of your hair; and likewise, eating fat-rich foods like bacon or sausage can lead to more oil production in the body, especially on the scalp, leading to dehydrated hair.

“But dehydration means more than just feeling thirsty; it can dry out skin and leave hair brittle,” reports Angela Santoriello of The Daily Meal.

The report continues claiming how “cereal is often considered a meal” in America; however, most cereal is packed with sugar, which should also be avoided to keep hair full. “Foods, like cereal, that are quickly broken down into sugar can increase the body’s androgen levels, which often leads to hair loss, especially in women,” according to the article.

“Foods with a high glycemic load may be associated with increased sebum production, which can lead to oily skin, and, therefore, oily hair,” said registered dietitian Michelle Dudash. Dudash details how pasta, starchy food, and even jasmine rice can have a higher glycemic index that produces more oil, leading to flat hair.

“Your hair is actually made of a protein called keratin,” Dudash said. “Diets low in protein will leave hair limp and unhealthy. That ‘bounce and shine’ most ladies want is not possible without a healthy dose of protein.”

Voluminous Hair Tips from Dr. Morno

Hair restoration specialist Dr. Kathleen Morno of Ritacca Cosmetic Surgery and Medspa adds “There are many invasive and non-invasive options to help fight hair loss. Red light therapy, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections, hair transplantation and even hair restoration supplements are all effective ways to promote new growth and stop further loss of your hair.”

Red light therapy is an effective treatment that is often used in conjunction with other hair loss treatments, like PRP injections. PRP is a growth factor derived from your own blood and then injected into the scalp to promote new hair growth. Hair restoration supplements like those from Viviscal (available at Ritacca Cosmetic Surgery and Medspa), has clinically proven to slow the loss of hair, and increase the rate of new hair growth. Of all the hair loss treatments available on the market, the one that has the fastest and most dramatic results would be hair transplantation. In as little as one office appointment, your own hair is extracted and implanted into the scalp at the area where you are experiencing the most hair loss. Over the next 6 months, your hair will continue to grow and fill in the area of loss.
