Treating subtle all-over hair loss is usually fairly straightforward, but advanced male pattern baldness can be challenging to correct. Many hair restoration methods transfer active hair follicles to places where follicles have grown dormant, so eligible candidates must have at least some remaining hair cover. If you have only a small amount of hair around the sides of your head, you may need to combine multiple treatments to achieve optimal results.

Follicular Unit Extraction: The Best Treatment for Male Pattern Baldness
Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a good alternative to conventional hair strip transplantation for most people with advanced hair loss. Rather than removing a complete section of scalp, FUE involves harvesting and transplanting individual follicular units, usually from the back of the head, to cover bald patches. Once in place, these units function exactly like any other healthy hair follicle, continually producing new hair. Furthermore, because hair from the back of the head is genetically “programmed” to remain active, transplanted hairs are highly resistant to hair loss.
Unlike the strip method, FUE will not create a visible scar, so it’s ideal for patients with hair too sparse to hide scar tissue. Each follicular unit contains just one to four hairs, along with supportive tissue, like collagen and blood vessels, so excising them doesn’t cause noticeable skin damage. The minimally invasive nature of FUE hair transplantation also prevents swelling and discomfort during recovery.
Complementary Therapies for More Complete Hair Restoration
FUE hair restoration works best on patients who still have a full “fringe” of hair extending around and behind their ears. If your remaining hair is sparse, we may recommend a combined approach to treatment. Having platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections before or after your hair transplant can encourage dormant hair follicles to become active again, thereby increasing total hair cover. (PRP is rich in human growth factors, which stimulate new hair growth.) Some of our patients also achieve excellent results after wearing a Capillus272 laser cap at least three times per week for six months.
Using these complementary therapies won’t extend your total recovery time, and they may greatly enhance your results. To help our patients manage the cost of combined treatment plans, we offer hair restoration financing through CareCredit.
