Hair Restoration Surgery FAQs

FUE Hair Transplant at RL Center for Cosmetic Surgery

Hair loss is an extremely common condition that effects most people at some point in their lives. Hair loss can be caused by a number of factors including thyroid disorders, trauma, illness, hormonal changes, diet, aging, and genetics. According to MediceneNet, hair loss affects 50 million men and 30 million women in America alone with close to 1 million hair restoration procedures (including hair restoration surgery) performed each year.

Our hair restoration center offers a variety of hair loss treatments including Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP injections for hair loss, the at home Capillus Laser 272 cap, topical products, and supplements. We also offer two methods of hair restoration surgery which are follicular unit extraction, or FUE and follicular unit transplant, known as FUT. This article provides answers to frequently asked questions regarding hair restoration surgery.

Follicular Unit Extraction — FUE Hair Restoration Surgery

Follicular unit extraction is a safe, minimally invasive surgical treatment that extracts donor hair in a transplant procedure. This natural looking hair loss solution offers a quick recovery time, little or no discomfort, with permanent results. Patients can relax comfortably while hair is extracted and diligently placed into the areas of need with little to no pain afterwards for a simple recovery.  FUE hair restoration surgery can be performed on all ethnicities. Certain types of hair are more challenging therefore it is important the procedure is performed by a highly experienced hair restoration specialist.

Follicular Unit Transplant — FUT Hair Restoration Surgery

Follicular Unit Transplant is a procedure that is used when you need a lot of hair follicles at once. Using this technique, hair grafts are extracted and are then implanted into the balding areas. Both procedures are done under local anesthesia but there is about a week or so of social downtime with FUT hair restoration surgery since there will be sutures from a tissue graft. Scarring is a common concern and while there can be a scar that runs where the tissue was excised it is intentionally concealed with hair as well as hair strategically placed to grow through the scar. Seeing an experienced hair restoration specialist will provide the most natural results.

Hair starts to grow about 6 weeks after it is transplanted and in about a year is usually full grown. Both procedures provide permanent results. The cost of the procedures truly varies on the amount of hair that needs to be transplanted and can range anywhere from $1,000 to $15,000.
